On the birthday of Gunnar Gunnarsson, 18th May, a small exhibition was opened at Skriðuklaustur. The exhibition is part of the 350 years jubileum of the manuscript collector Árni Magnússon, celebrated by the Árni Magnússon Institute for Icelandic Studies. Our former president Vigdís Finnbogadóttir brought the replica of the story of saint Margaret to Skriðuklaustur again but the original manuscript was sent from Skriðuklaustur to Copenhagen in the year 1704.  Pictures and video can been found at Facebook Skriðuklaustur.

Saturday 18th May is both the birthday of Gunnar Gunnarsson and an international museum's day. This year we will have special visit by former president, Vigdís Finnbogadóttir, who will bring us a replica of a manuscript from 1500 which perhaps was written in the old cloister of Skriða. The exhibition of this manuscript is part of larger project launched by the The Árni Magnússon Institute for Icelandic Studies which celebrates 350 years since Árni Magnússon was born, but he received the manuscript of Saint Margaret in 1704 from a sheriff who lived at Skriðuklaustur. All are welcome to the opening of this small exhibition at 14.00 on Saturday.

The exhibition about the history and excavation of the medieval cloister at Skriðuklaustur has been reopened. Guests can learn about the life at Skriðuklaustur 500 years ago and the research and excavation that lasted from 2002-2012. Artifacts from the excavation are on display, f.ex. a golden ring, a French jeton and statue of saint Barbara which was found in pieces in the ruins. The heritage site with the monastic ruins is always open and accessable with information boards. In May the culture centre is open 12:00 till 17:00.

Today a new cultural fund was established at Skriðuklaustur by the minister of education and culture, Katrín Jakobsdóttir. The purpose of this new fund is to be a foundation for the Institute of Gunnar Gunnarsson and also to fund projects of writers, artists, scholars and students. The ministry of education and culture contributes the fund with 43 millions of ISK but hopefully more money will be raced. The first distribution from the fund will be at the 125th years  jubileum of the writer Gunnar Gunnarsson on 18th May 2014.
