Our Easter Exhibitions will be opened Saturday 19th March at 14:00. In our large room final year students in product design from the Iceland Academy of the Arts will exhibit the Willow Project. In our small gallery the Belgian-Lebanese artist Sandra Issa shows here drawings and paintings, naming the exhibition From Beirut to Brussels.
The Willow Project is made by the final year students in the product design department at the Iceland Academy of the Arts and is an investigation into one of Iceland’s newly gained raw materials, the willow tree. For centuries wood has not been a common resource in Iceland. By deconstructing the tree into micro-scale and reassembling the found elements, the students rendered new materials that could stand by themselves. Setting themselves a frame of adding nothing but water and heat, they further used all byproducts as valuable resources. Inspired by the circulation of natural matter, the transformed materials were returned to the forest as nutrition.
A book has been published about the Willow Project by Partus Press and it is for sale at Skriðuklaustur. A special website has also been made here.
